What Is Optioneering?
Optioneering is a term increasingly used in industry when management needs to be confident of a course of action; particularly where regulatory or funding bodies seek a demonstration of due process.
You might recognise the problems as:
- Selecting a new product to bring to market
- Selecting a prototype
- Selecting vendors or suppliers
- Conducting relocation studies
- Choosing a core technology for a new process
- Choosing an employee
In these cases the consequences of the decision are serious and so a methodology is required to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted and due weight is applied. The Krysalis standardised methodology has been developed through many years of practice.
- It focuses on defining the value system that will be used as the level playing field for the evaluation.
- It encourages explicit involvement of experts in a way that leaves a clear audit trail and helps decisions to be made with confidence
The greatest benefit of using the Optioneering process is that it drives towards a consensus. This in turn leads to commitment to action, which is the sustaining force to see decisions implemented effectively.

The Optioneering course will teach this structure by way of a case study. The participants will work individually or in groups, to represent different roles/ perspectives in an organisation. They will be given different briefs on a problem and the aim will be to come to a consensus.
The group will need to balance the desire regarding what is best for the organisation, ensuring at the same time that THEIR Options are given a fair hearing. An accelerated 6-week study is compressed into 1 day, where our OnBalance software will be used as a catalyst for the decision and a repository of the story so far.
As in real life new information is available in a resource library and will be force fed, to represent the changing influence of the real world.
The public courses will run on one of our pre pre-prepared case studies. If the course is run in-house then we will tailor a current or past problem. Although the use and display of OnBalance will form a central part of the day, no attempt will be made to teach the software. The work will concentrate on how the analysis screens bring clarity and focus to the process.
